Covering Carolina
smiling_doctor2.jpgToday in South Carolina, 700,000 people or just over one in six South Carolinians is uninsured. More than 60 percent of persons without insurance earn incomes below 250 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). Our state’s overall health status ranks among the nation’s lowest, and we have a high incidence of nearly every chronic disease. A lack of adequate coverage is often cited as a key factor in these poor rankings.

This is a problem that impacts the health and finances of those without adequate insurance, the cost all of us – insured or not – pay for health care and insurance premiums, the cost of doing business in South Carolina, and the health status and productivity of our population in general.

We all understand that we have key roles in solving the problem and that any successful and meaningful reform will require that we work together.
